Skill: Place Value | No. of Players: 2-4 | Set-up: Quick-Average

The set-up time depends on whether you are printing out your place value chart or having students create their own. Students draw cards or pieces or paper one at a time and assign them to a specific spot on their place value chart. Once assigned the pieces become "stuck". The student who creates the largest number wins.

Materials:

  • Cards (Remove kings and jacks) or slips of paper labelled 0-9

  • Optional: Pre-made Place value chart

How to Play:

  1. Students take turns drawing cards from a deck or pulling slips of paper one at a time to build their number.

  2. Students then place assign the card/slip of paper to a specific place value with the goal of creating the largest number. Once the card has been assigned it can not be moved.

  3. Once all place values have a card assigned the students compare the numbers for the larger number to determine the winner of that round. **

Modifications:

  1. ** Have students record their built numbers and comparisons on a separate piece of paper.

  2. After playing the largest number wins for a while, engage students to assign cards to create the lowest number or a target number (i.e. closest to 5,000).

  3. If decimals have been taught, use a place value chart (linked here) with decimals from tenths to thousandths for students to compare decimals.
