Students learn about fractions by drawing and naming them. The only challenge is that students cannot write numbers or words to accompany their drawing!
Materials:
Strips of paper with fractions (or print and cut this page!)
Whiteboards & markers OR paper & pencils
How to play:
Assign students 1 or 2 as you hand out each students a slip of paper with a fraction.
Student 1 illustrates the fraction on their slip without using numbers or words. Student 2 has one minute to guess the fraction, if they get it correct, they earn a point.
Student 2 takes their turn to illustrate the fraction on the slip without using numbers or words and Student 1 has the opportunity to guess. If Student 1 names the fraction in one minute, they earn a point.
As students play, walk around and make sure students are able to represent fractions correctly.
Have students switch partners**
Repeat the process as before.
Modifications:
Do an example all together, make sure to emphasize the role of the denominators and numerator in a fraction.
**To make this less chaotic, have all Student 1s stay put and Student 2s find a new partner. Then switch it up the next time students need to switch partners, all Student 2s stay put and Student 1s move.
